35: The Blue Note Sound. Although the history of recorded jazz is not the same thing as the history of jazz itself, we depend on records for evidence of musical life beyond the recording studio. Jazz was a puzzling accident for most recording executives, but the founders of the Blue Note label and their successors were committed to the music, and developed a design idiom to match.
