Why is it so difficult to make a machine that could read aloud this or any other piece of text? Professor Jonathan Allen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been attempting to build such a machine for over 12 years.
He discusses the problems with John Maddox and argues that some of his practical solutions may throw light on the way the human brain translates thought into words.
