Sunday Feature: Changing Flags

on BBC Radio 3

On the eve of Hong Kong's reunification with China, Fintan O'Toole explores the nature of national identity. For 150 years, the colony has been home to people from China, India and the United Kingdom. Over the decades, successive generations varied in their allegiance, and, until relatively recently, few identified themselves as being 'of Hong Kong". Now, in the face of the most momentous change of all, many claim an identity enmeshed with the place and all it represents. The programme explores the nature of that identity and ponders its survival in the future.
