Prizewinners: The Investiture of HRH The Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle

on BBC One London

A series of outstanding BBC television programmes which have won awards at festivals and competitions in Britain and abroad: tonight's programme was awarded the Grand Prix, Concours International de Reportage d'Actualites at the 1970 Cannes Festival.

This specially edited version highlights the actual ceremony of Investiture where the Letters Patent are read and the Queen invests the Prince of Wales with the insignia of the Principality and the Earldom of Chester. It includes the procession of Bards, Yeomen, Gentlemen-at-Arms, and Archdruids, the arrival of the Royal Family and some fine views of the small town of Caernarvon, dominated by its splendid castle. This was the biggest colour operation ever undertaken by the BBC and the most complex Outside Broadcast since the Coronation.
