Felix Mendelssohn began to compose when he was ten years of age. By the time he was 16 he had written four operas, 12 string symphonies, two piano concertos and several chamber works. His parents considered a career as a musician unsuitable for a gentleman but they relented when faced with glowing reports from eminent figures of the day and their talented son's own enthusiasm and astonishing accomplishments.
