International Athletics Golden Gala from Rome

on BBC One London

The Grand Prix circuit moves on to Rome's Olympic Stadium, venue for the fifth meeting of the season, the European Cup Final. With just two months to go to the World Championships in Stuttgart, the world's top athletes continue their build-ups in the stadium which staged the first World
Championships in 1987. Olympic gold medallists
Linford Christie and Sally Gunnell carry the main British hopes on the Grand Prix circuit along with high hurdler
Colin Jackson , who hopes to translate his domination in meetings of this kind into major championship gold in Stuttgart. Kevin Young, the American Olympic 400m hurdles champion and world record holder, was unbeaten on the athletics tour last season and is among the favourites to collect the overall Grand Prix title again. Other world record holders expected to be in action here include pole vaulter
Sergey Bubka , middle distance star Noureddine Morceli and javelin thrower Jan Zelezny. American sprinters
Gwen Torrance and Gail Devers , both gold medallists in Barcelona last year and major points earners in Grand Prix, lead the way in the women's events.
Commentary by David Coleman , Stuart Storey and Paul Dickenson. Introduced by Helen Rollason with Brendan Foster.
