In the Gilbert Group during the nineteen-twenties, seven or eight hundred indentured Chinese labourers were employed by a phosphate mining concern on Ocean Island. Their clashes with their Gilbertese co-workers produced certain problems for the local government, which hoped to separate the two factions by building a high fence.
