Leonidas Kavakos (violin) BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conductor Jerzy Maksymiuk
Jerzy Maksymiuk has appeared annually at the Proms with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since his appointment as Chief Conductor eight years ago. The orchestra's two 1992 programmes (the second tomorrow at 7.30pm) emphasise Eastern European music, though the Haydn symphony and the Stravinsky concerto have French connections.
"La Reine" acquired its nickname as a result of Marie Antoinette 's preference for the piece.
Stravinsky's concerto was written in Nice in 1931, in collaboration with its first exponent, Samuel Dushkind. Tchaikovsky's programmatic Fourth Symphony is an intensely personal statement dating from the aftermath of his disastrous marriage.
