Medical Mysteries: The Dancing Mania

on BBC Radio 4 FM

'Both men and women were abused by the desire to such a degree that they danced in their homes, in the churches, and in the streets. While they danced they called out the names of demons, but they were unaware of this, nor did they pay attention to modesty, even though people watched them.... Those who were cured said they seemed to have been dancing in a river of blood...'
From earliest times there are records of outbreaks of compulsive dancing accompanied by lurid hallucinations. What were the causes? Have they anything in common?
