London Jazz Festival

on BBC Radio 3

Julius Hemphill , who died last year aged 55, was not only a talented saxophonist and co-founder of the World Saxophone Quartet, but also a considerable composer. A selection of his music was played by the Creative Jazz Orchestra at a festival concert given on the South Bank in the Purcell Room. They were joined by three American musicians: guitarist Bill Frisell , saxophonist Tim Berne and multi-instrumentalist
Marty Ehrlich. The Orchestra's line-up also includes many top British musicians, such as trumpeter Henry Lowther , saxophonists Evan Parker , lain Dixon and Julian Arguelles , guitarist Mike Walker and drummer
Steve Arguelles. The recording of the concert is introduced by Alyn Shipton who, during the interval, talks to
Marty Ehrlich about his career, which included playing with Julius Hemphill. Producer Derek Drescher
