FERUCCIO BUSONI , who died only eight years ago, was onr of the most eminent pianists of his day and was so regarded in his lifetime. That, however, was not what Busoni really wanted, for it was as a composer that he wished to be commended to posterity, and it still remains to be seen how far he will ultimately have his wish. Considering that his career as a pianist must have taken up much of his time and energy, he managed to compose a good deal-four operas, including the much discussed Doktor Faust , several works for orchestra, and a fair amount of piano works. But, for one thing, he will most certainly be remembered, and that is his scholarly editing of Bach's pianoforte music, and his Bach transcriptions. Busoni was a great admirer of Liszt and his work, and in the making of transcriptions he put his admiration of a great master in that medium to a practical purpose.
