Despite spasmodic outbursts, violence in the Province is now at its lowest level since the earliest days of the troubles seven years ago. For many people, life is beginning to return to some form of normality. Yet the political future remains as uncertain as ever. How can Direct Rule continue and what can replace it? Have attitudes changed or is sectarian feeling as strong as ever? Does the Irish dimension present an insuperable obstacle to any lasting political settlement in Northern Ireland?
