Here is a very varied group of lighter pieces of the kind that anyone can enjoy. The Carmen selection gives us the quasi-Spanish atmosphere, and plenty of good 'tune.' And tune, too, we are sure to get in anything that comes from the pen of Mr. Herman Finck, long looked up to in London as one of the most effective of theatre Composers, Conductors and Musical Directors. Mr. Eric Coates, Viola player and Composer, has specialised in what we may call lighter-serious music, of which this Suite is an example. Mr. Ansell is, of course, the new Musical Director of the London Station of the B.B.C. As for Schumann's Slumber Song, many listeners have played this in its original form as a Piano piece, and all will be glad to enjoy again its graceful, flowing melody.
