Strauss in Weimar
In 1889 the young Richard Strauss became assistant conductor at the Weimar Opera. By the time he left five years later, he had transformed Weimar into "the centre of the musical life of Germany".
Kenneth Birkin presents the first of six programmes looking at Strauss's achievement and its effect on his career, beginning with a reconstruction of a concert Strauss conducted in Weimar 100 years ago today. Berlioz Overture: King Lear LSO/Colin Davis
