Panorama: The Battle of Ideas

on BBC One London

Is Britain living through a crisis of capitalism, or, as Sir Keith Joseph believes, a crisis of socialism? A year ago today Sir Keith, the man charged by Tory Party leader, Margaret Thatcher, with rethinking Conservative policies, launched what he describes as a 'Campaign for Capitalism.'
In his Campaign, Sir Keith has made an unprecedented attack on past Conservative governments for failing to challenge and reverse 'the foolish myths of postwar socialism that have eroded our liberties, frustrated endeavour, divided our people and destroyed the self-confidence of a once great nation.'
Is Sir Keith the man to bring the Tories in from the cold or is he, as some leading figures in his own party believe, an ivory tower intellectual who is out of touch with the harsh realities of Britain in 1975? David Dimbleby talks to Rt Hon Sir Keith Joseph, MP and examines his ideas.
