The tragedy at Lockerbie showed how vulnerable aircraft are to the terrorist but researchers have also learnt from what happened to Flight 103. Forensic evidence from the Lockerbie disaster showed that the fatal damage occurred when the bomb blast breached the walls of a metal luggage container - the type used worldwide to carry hundreds of suitcases in airplane holds.
As a result of this evidence, new luggage containers have been designed. Their plastic walls are able to stretch and deform, hopefully enough to diffuse the destructive force of a terrorist bomb planted inside.
Plus a report on a new strain of spiky grass that, when planted around airfields, deters birds from settling, thereby removing the threat they can pose to aviation.
