In 1732 thirty thousand Protestants left Salzburg to escape from persecution, and were invited by Frederick William I to settle in Prussia. For the reception of some of these wanderers in Leipzig Bach wrote this Cantata. Its German title is 'Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot.'
There are seven Movements.
