Forty-two years ago Sam Pollock was a Lance-Corporal in the British Army, stationed in North China. There was almost continuous civil war between Marshal Wu and Marshal Chang—two ' war lords' whose troops looted and murdered. ' But the actual armed conflict,' says Pollock, ' between the rivals, was nothing like the ruthless people's war advocated today. It was, rather, a Nice People's War.'
