Opera Matinee: The Two Widows

on BBC Radio 3

In Smetana's fifth opera, the two widows Karolina and Anezka live on Karolina's country estate. The gamekeeper Mumlal brings in a poacher he has caught. The poacher, Ladislav, turns out to be the owner of the neighbouring estate. Anezka soon falls in love with him but will not admit it. This performance was given in Prague's 18th-century
Estates Theatre. Sung in Czech.
