Performance on 3 Radio 3: 7.30pm Tchaikovsky's opera Mazeppa, about a notorious Ukrainian separatist, has the makings of a historical spectacle but places heavy emphasis on romantic intrigue. It is performed by the Kirov Chorus and Orchestra, with Nikolai Putilin as Mazeppa and Tatiana Pavlovskaya as Maria, the woman he loves.
