Two days before the enforced marriage of Madeline Bray to Arthur Gride, Nicholas hears of the plot from Newman Noggs. He rushes to Madeline and them to Gride, but as has appeals are unsuccessful he arrives on the wedding morning with Kate to make one last attempt to stop the ceremony. A few minutes later Walter Bray dies, and in defiance of their uncle they carry Madeline to safety.
