'AIRS AND VARIATIONS'

on BBC Home Service Basic

View in Radio Times

A programme of popular music to suit all tastes compiled by Hugo Rignold , who will conduct the Augmented Dance Orchestra
Singers: Dorothy Carless and Denny Dennis
Compere, James Dyrenforth
A former member of Jack Hylton 's Band, Hugo Rignold has played violin and viola in numberless musical combinations, notably with Fred Hartley , in that remarkably popular series ' Soft Lights and Sweet Music ', and more recently with his own orchestra from the London Casino. Though today most of his time is taken up with conducting. he plays his two chief instruments with the facility of one who can give all his time to them. On one occasion in ' Soft Lights and Sweet Music ' he achieved the desired effect by playing a bass as well. Dorothy Carless , who used to broadcast in ' Soft Lights and Sweet Music ' too, is one of the Cavendish Three, a second member of which is Pat Rignold , Hugo's sister. Dorothy is also Eugene Pini 's wife, and their photographs as well as Hugo Rignold 's may be seen in Radio Miscellany on page 5. Dorothy made her radio debut in 1934 in a Bryan Michie production, The Show Goes Over.
