Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford Certain influential literary critics such as Donald Davie have encouraged the view that poetry can be the art of reviving dead metaphors. Mr. Ricks criticises this view. He believes that revived metaphors may sometimes be brought in, rather than brought out, by criticism.
