The word "gargoyle" is old French for throat and these pagan creatures were orginally simply stone gutters. But why do they adorn Christian buildings and who designed and carved them? Louisa Buck puts her ear close to some gargoyles' lips to hearthe words which splutterfrom theirthroats.
