Sir Hamilton Harty was an exact contemporary of Sir Thomas Beecham and, in the opinion of many, no less distinguished as a musician. But today he is largely forgotten and his few recordings are mostly on worn 78s. In his day he was an ardent champion of Berlioz, and it was Harty who conducted the premiere performances of Walton's First Symphony. Producer ALAN HAYDOCK. Stereo
