Little Katia has been adopted by her father's cousin Sophie, after her mother's death. In the winter of 1837 yet another relative comes to stay at Trostnikovo - the beautiful Nastia. Although she is already a grown-up young lady, she proves to be a very gay and lively companion for the children.
