To mark the upcoming 100th anniversary of the birth of screen legend John Wayne (born Marion Robert Morrison), film director Peter Bogdanovich pays tribute to the iconic star who remains best known as the embodiment of the Hollywood western. The programme asserts that Wayne's tough, idealistic, independent but innocent on-screen hero persona could not exist in today's less hierarchially defined moral climate. Fanning the flames of the Wayne mythology are his son Michael, Time magazine film critic Richard Schickel, biographer Randy Roberts, Hollywood executive Michael Medavoy, and actors Lauren Bacall and Kirk Douglas.
