Dylan in the Madhouse

on BBC Four

Surprisingly, Bob Dylan first came to the attention of the British public through his role in a 1963 BBC TV play, The Madhouse on Castle Street. The tape was later wiped and has since become the holy grail of missing Dylan works. Joining the hunt, Arena uncovers rare Dylan tracks and the fascinating story of his first time in London. Featuring writer Evan Jones, director Philip Saville, and fellow musicians Martin Carthy and Peggy Seeger.

Dylan in the Madhouse
10.00pm BBC4 Bob Dylan's first TV appearance was as an actor/singer in a 1963 BBC TV play, The Madhouse on Castle Street. The tape was later wiped, so this documentary becomes a quest to recover the lost recording, especially Dylan's four songs, including Blowin' in the Wind. More than that, it invokes the hard winter of 1962/63. It's enjoyably nostalgic, but without the lost footage, this is a real doughnut of a film: it has a hole instead of a centre. GE
