For many years, the greatest Russian composer of his day was supported, emotionally and financially, by a wealthy patroness, Nadezhda von Meek. They exchanged photographs and he asked for financial support.
Then he wrote with unexpected news - he was to be married. Excerpts from the letters are read by Alex Jennings and Anna Massey. with music from the composer's ballet scores. Today. music from Swan Lake performed by the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, conductor Yevgeni Svetlanov.
