When German-born Joe Newman, who has always believed his father to have been killed during the war, suddenly receives a strange telephone message, apparently from his father, he travels to a small Bavarian town to try to solve the mystery. He meets only suspicion and a wall of silence and becomes convinced that the truth about his father's death is being covered up.
