Meteorologists tend to describe their forecasting ability as 'skill' - an indication of the part still played by intuition and experience in predicting the weather. Reasonable forecasts can now be made days, weeks and even years in advance. But will they ever be completely accurate?
In the second of two programmes, Anthony Smith explores the obstacles in the path of the perfect forecast.
