for Remembrance from Coventry Cathedral. On the night of 14 November 1940 the people of Coventry had to endure 11 hours of concentrated bombing by the German Luftwaffe. When they emerged from their shelters the next morning they found a city in chaos, thousands of homes destroyed, familiar landmarks gone and their Cathedral a smouldering ruin.
That same night British aircraft bombed the German city of Cologne. One of the men who flew that mission was Coventry-born Fred Devey. He tells Geoffrey Wheeler how the irony of that tragic coincidence completely changed his attitude to war. In the ruins of the old Cathedral the COVENTRY CITADEL SALVATION ARMY BAND accompany the people of their city in their Remembrance Day hymns.
