Only 38 years old when he died, the grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendels sohn and the son of a cultured and prosperous banker, he enjoyed the benefits of easy financial circumstances. His genius flowered early and was quickly recognised. Most of the records this week will be of music which is rarely heard.
