THE FIFTIES
3.00 Music in Europe
The fifties was a decade of bewildering musical variety across Europe: young composers tried to rebuild a musical language from scratch in the vacuum left by the Second World War, experimenting with quasi-scientific rigour on every parameter of musical experience. At the same time, older and more traditional composers continued to follow their more familiar course.
Ivan Hewett picks his way through the contradictions, pitting the old against the new, and introduces music from France by Poulenc and Boulez, from Germany by Hindemith and Henze and from Britain by Britten and Maxwell Davies.
