The overture to The Boatswains Mate is in the true spirit of the W. W. Jacobs story on which the opera is based. The widowed landlady of an inn is wooed by an ex-boatswain and an ex-soldier. The latter is engaged by the boatswain to stage a mock burglary at the inn in order to bring home to the lonely landlady the need of male protection; but, as things turn out, she proves to be very capable of looking after herself, and, incidentally, of choosing a second husband, who is none other than the amateur burglar.
