Composer of the Week Monteverdi

on BBC Radio 3

With Simon Heighes.
Opera for All. In the late 1630s, Monteverdi was an enthusiastic supporter of new public opera houses opening in Venice. One of his first pieces for them -
L'lncoronazione di Poppea - created a sensation through its searing portrayal of passion, love and betrayal at the court of Emperot-Nero. Simon Heighes introduces excerpts from this work and from the public opera 11 Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria.
