WHAT DID BLAKE BELIEVE?

on Third Programme

by DÉSIRÉE HIRST
Lecturer in the Department of English, Swansea
Désirée Hirst has made an intensive study of Blake's sources and of the traditions, mystical and intellectual, which shaped his thought and its poetic expression. She believes that Blake's religious convictions can only be understood as a series of apparent contradictions, the key to which is his dictum that ' without Contraries is no progression.'
