3: Mozart in Mannheim and Paris
(1777-78). In 1777 Mozart set off for
Mannheim with his motherfor company. He was keen to secure a post in Mannheim with its famous orchestra but was soon distracted by a beautiful soprano called Aloysia Weber. After much persuasion Leopold Mozart convinced his son that Paris was a better option. But things did not go well there either- Mozart hated the French and their music, and then his mother's illness and subsequent death tested all his reserves.
