Selim Palmgren is a distinguished Finnish composer who lives at Helsinki and is a professor at the Conservatoire there. As a composer he is at his best in delicate miniatures such as Evening Whispers and Night in May, where the music rarely rises above a pianissimo and the titles mean little more than to serve as a stimulus to the imagination. Occasionally he makes a more directly picturesque appeal such as in The Sea' and 'The Dragon Fly .
