Sportsnight Special

on BBC One London

Tonight's live football action comes from St James' Park, where Newcastle United take on Halmstads of Sweden in the first round, first leg of the Uefa Cup. After their poor start to the Premiership, Newcastle will be hoping to find some early success in Europe. Despite spending an astonishing £65 million on new players, most recently the £15 million world-record signing of Alan Shearer from Blackburn, manager Kevin Keegan has had little return as yet.

If Newcastle's aim for world domination is to be taken seriously, the team must start tonight. Sweden's cup final winners Halmstads were one of the country's top teams in the seventies - coached by Englishman Roy Hodgson. But since then they had failed to add any silverware to their cabinet until last year.
Introduced by Gary Lineker, with commentary from Barry Davies.
