As populations increase and standards and public health and hygiene advance, the demand for fresh water continues to go up Traditionally, we have got our water supplies by using the land surface as a catchment area, and collecting the water from springs. wells, or rivers. These are becoming inadequate and Professor Silver describes some outstanding British engineering achievements which make it possible to get water from the sea at an economic price.
