Bajazet is based on a true story. It is set in the harem of the Turkish Sultan Murad about 1635 and the action is continuous. When a dramatist observes the classical Unity ot- Time (as Shakespeare does only in The Tempest). he shows us the final day in a situation that has been developing over many years, and we must bear with him during the first few minutes while "is characters, ostensibly in natural conversation, inform Us of the events that have led up to this moment of crisis
