There are only two known types of fixed wing vertical take-off aircraft in the world. The first was the British-designed Harrier, followed by the Soviet Unions sea-borne Yakalov 36 (NATO code name ' Forger '). The fact that the Western powers possess Harriers at all is entirely due to the perseverance of a small group of men in two British companies who became totally committed to the vertical take-off concept.
Tonight's film traces the rise and fall of Britain's ' Jump Jet from first principles to the present aay.
