The export drive; spotlight on the men, the methods, the markets that are earning Britain's living abroad.
Since the war, Southend-on-Sea has gradually been shedding its cockles-and-candy-floss image. The planners have been turning their backs on the Golden Mile, the famous Lights and 'the longest pleasure pier in the world,' and concentrating on factories, office blocks and ultra-modern shopping precincts. The change is dramatic, but even bigger developments could be on their way in a few years' time. The key to it all is London's Third Airport. If the Government decide to build it' at nearby Foulness, Southend could well become Britain's first Air City and a major launching pad for our international trade.
