Real Chicago events of 1968 provide the background to the fictional story of John, a television cameraman whose glossy life is undisturbed by the disasters he photographs daily. John first becomes aware of his own part in the violence and voyeurism when his footage of demonstrators is given to the FBI and CIA: ironically, a large part of Medium Cool material was subsequently requisitioned by the Justice Department.
