Lord Castlereagh by H. MONTGOMERY HYDE , D.Litt.
In 1796 Lord Castlereagh was Keeper of the Privy Seal in Ireland, and for a long time acted as Chief Secretary, but when in 1800 the Act of Union was carried through the Irish Parliament, his official connection with his native land practically ended. His quarrret with Canning and the subsequent duel they fought, in which Canning was wounded, is one of the causes célèbres of history. H. Montgomery Hyde wrote an important biography of Lord Castlereagh which won for the author the degree of Doctor of Literature at Queen's University, Belfast.
