I Don't Need No Doctor

on BBC Radio 2

1/2. With the fad-and-fashion-mad world of popular music traditionally hostile to physically disabled performers, BBC disability affairs correspondent Peter White assesses the progress made by this marginalised group of musical artists in establishing a presence in the mainstream. Contributors include soul singer Teddy Pendergrass (left quadriplegic after a car accident), deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie (who "hears" through vibration), wheelchair-user singer/songwriter
Robert Wyatt and Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen , who lost his arm and now uses a specially adapted drum kit. The programme begins backstage at a Mystery Jets gig with frontman Blaine Harrison , who lives with spina bifida. Producer Emma Kingsley
