Alcohol: More Harm Than Heroin
Everyone knows the horror of illegal drugs like heroin. Yet alcohol is killing far more people.
Today people drink twice as much as they did 30 years ago, and start drinking very young. Every year 1,000 children under 15 are admitted to hospital with acute alcohol poisoning and, as Richard Lindley reports, 15- to 17-year-olds now spend E277 million on drink.
Alcohol-dependent teenagers are now joining the middle-aged in psychiatric clinics. As the government announces a new ministerial group to deal with the use and abuse of alcohol,
Panorama reports on our favourite drug - one more harmful than heroin.
