In at the Deep End

on BBC One London

Chris Serle and Paul Heiney take it in turns to plunge in at the deep end and learn about a completely new world. Auctioneer
Chris Serle hopes to make it as an auctioneer at Sotheby's, the world's largest auction house. But it seems a tall order as he falters through his first attempts - at a small country sale in Norfolk, and the biggest cattle market in Europe.
He visits tobacco auctions in America for advice from the 500-word-a-minute champions, whose tongues 'wag at both ends'.
And he picks up tips from the Master, Peter Wilson , in the elegant salerooms of Monte Carlo.
'There's more to it than I had ever imagined,' sighs Chris, as he struggles with practice sessions at Sotheby's and consults top art dealers, salesmen and buyers like actor Brian Glover.
But will he make it on the day? He had better. There's a lot of money at stake. And, as Sotheby's hammers home to Chris, 'You can't afford to make mistakes'.
