Haydn and Schoenberg

on Third Programme

Wigmore Ensemble
Leader, Granville Jones
Conducted by Frederick Prausnitz

The Divertimento by Haydn, which is receiving its first broadcast performance in this country, was completed in 1766. There are nine movements.
Schoenberg's Three Little Pieces were written after Erwartung, the George Songs, and the Five Orchestral Pieces. In his book Das Werk Arnold Schoenbergs, Josef Rufer writes: 'This is a manuscript of two completed and one unfinished piece for several solo instruments'. The first consists of twelve bars, the second of seven bars, and the third (unfinished) of eight bars. In this concert the work will be performed twice.
